“翻译”实际上是测试我们对文中句子的意义理解。与单句翻译不同的是，有的句子意思需要参照上下文进行理解，译出的句子才更确切。另外，“英译汉”，译出的句子要尽可能忠实原文，也要符合汉语的表达习惯。2001年全国中学生英语能力竞赛初赛的“翻译”题要求：将英语短文中的划线部分译成汉语。
