比如有这样一句话:汤姆真是一个冷静的人,他从不让自己失控,从不发怒。下面是第一种译法,由于使用了dispassionate(冷静的)和umbrageous(易怒的)这种比较生僻、艰深的单词,初学者很可能看不懂。
Tom is really a dispassionate man, he never loses control of himself and hardly becomes umbrageous.
第二种译法正好相反,它虽然不使用生僻、艰深的单词,但大量使用不容易理解的英语习语(idiom),比如blow one's stack(发脾气),初学者同样很可能看不懂。
Tom is really a cool cat, he never blows his stack and hardly flies off the handle.
这两种倾向,我认为都是不可取的,我认为真正好的英语,应当是那种平易的英语(plain English),不深不浅,不雅不俗,各种水平的人都能看懂。按照这个标准,我认为上面这句话最好翻译为:
Tom is really a calm man, he can always control himself and hardly becomes angry.
