英语形容词修饰名词一般应置于被修饰的名词之前.例如:
This is the most beautiful place I have ever visited.这是我参观过的最漂亮的地方.
We have just learned a difficult text in English.我们刚学了一篇难的英语课文.
英语形容词与其它词构成形容词词组修饰名词,通常置于被修饰的名词之后,但一般不能与被修饰的名词分隔.例如:
The police have found the driver responsible for the accident.警察找到了要对交通事故负责的司机.
但在有些情况下,形容词和被形容词修饰的名词却被不定冠词分隔.例如:
In that area, AIDS is so dreadful a disease that the very mention of it strikes terror into the population. 在那个地区,艾滋病是一种可怕的疾病,一提到它人们就非常害怕.
在该句中形容词dreadful和被其修饰的名词disease被不定冠词a分隔.
如果在原英语句子中,把so换成such, dreadful 应直接修饰disease,两者之间不能用a 分隔,而应把a 用在dreadful disease之前.即:In that area, AIDS is such a dreadful disease that the very mention of it strikes terror into the population.
为什么会有这两种不同的修饰方式,原因并不复杂.这主要是因为so和such两个词的词性不同.so是副词,such 是形容词.副词修饰形容词或副词,所以so必须置于dreadful之前,这时的不定冠词a 不得不后移,于是就造成了形容词和被修饰名词的分隔现象.such是形容词, 形容词修饰名词, 上面含such的句子中such修饰名词disease.除了在so... that... 结构中,形容词和被修饰名词被不定冠词分隔外,下面几种结构和句式中,形容词和被修饰名词也被不定冠词分隔:
1. as... as... 例如:
John is as diligent a student as any other one in the class. 约翰与班里其他学生一样勤奋.
2. so... as... 例如:
She is not so clever a girl as you. 她没有你聪明.
3. too... to... 例如:
He is too old a man to do such heavy work. 他太老了,不能干这样的重活.
4. so... as to... 例如:
He wrote so GREat a work as to make him internationally famous.他写了一本伟大的著作,使他闻名于世.
5. how引起的感叹句.例如:
How lovely a day it is today!今天天气多好啊!
How difficult a task you have finished! 你们完成了一个多么艰巨的任务啊!
上面 1—5几种情况中的句子可分别转换成:
1. John is as diligent as any other student in the class.
2. She is not so clever as you.
