六级听力训练的素材选择大多为交际场合的一般话题。对话题材有关于校园生活的，有关于公共场所的，也有关于家庭的等。在这些题材中，对话部分的试题涉及动作或对话的地点和对话的任何一方或对话中提及的一方的职业，每次必有。解这一类题的关键在于抓住与说话人身份或谈话内容相关的词，也就是抓住关键词。
譬如，两个大学生谈话的内容不外乎与他们身份相关的大学生活、学习课程、报到注册、课外活动等。反言之，从对话中涉及的大学学习、生活情况的几个关键词，就能判定谈话双方的身份以及谈话发生的地点。
下面列举几个六级听力试题中经常涉及到的对话双方的关系。收集相关词汇，听熟它们不仅有益于听力考试，而且有益于生活中口语的应用。主要的如：
教师、教授、导师与学生（teacher ／professor ／students'advisor and student）
学生与学生（classmates，roommates，schoolmates）
图书管理员与学生（librarian and student）
舍监与学生（housemaster ／housemother and student）
营业员与顾客（shop assistant ／attendant and customer）
服务员与旅客、顾客（serviceman and passenger ／customer）
上述关系的对话地点有：check-in counter，plane，post office，bank等。此外还有如下五种关系：
药剂师与病人（pharmacist ／patient）（药剂师与病人的对话地点一般是pharm acy。）
医生与病人（doctor，physician，dentist ／patient）（医生与病人的对话一般发生在hospital，clinic，ward，infirmary等。）
夫妻（husband and wife）
主人与客人（host，hostess ／guest）
修理工与顾客（repairman ／customer）
听力中常用到的修理工名称有：plumber，carpenter，electrician，repairman 等。
以上十一种对话双方的关系只是一些比较常用的，也是考生必须掌握的。如果掌握了这些相关的基本词汇，以及他们的一般关系，就比较容易抓住回答“地点、职业”类试题的关键词和词组了。
下面就地点与职业分类举例解析：
一、地点对话所发生的地点或对话者要前往的地点往往在对话内容中不给出，而是要求通过情节内容以及与这个地点有关的关键信息进行判断。
例 1：
W：Hello，I want to open an account．Shall I fill in this form？
M ：Yes．You'd fill in a form ，but not this one．Go over to that desk and the man there will help you．
Q：What's the most probable place the conversation takes place？
A．It might be in a closed room ．
B．It's at a desk where the accountant works．
C．It's in a bank．
D．It's a newly-opened shop．
试题是要求解决对话的地点。录音中有两个词组与之有关，它们是：open an account
（开帐户），fill in a form（填单子），理解了这两个关键词组的含义，很容易判断对话发生的地点是银行，因此C为正确选择。
例2：—Are you ready to check out？
—Yes．You pay the bill，and I'll call the desk and have our luggage taken out to the taxi．
Q：Where does this conversation most probably take place？
A．in a railroad station
B．in a bus terminal
C．in a restaurant
D．in a hotel room
在这四个选择项中，容易混淆的是C和D，但是，一旦抓住luggage这个词就能排除干扰项C。因为在餐厅里一般不会发生搬运行李这种事的。那么，对话肯定发生在旅馆里。D为正确的选择。
一般说，“地点、职业”试题属比较简单的一类，可是有时候也很迷惑人，例如。
例3：
—I need a book of stamps and I'd also like to send this package first class．
—Here are your stamps，but you have to take package to the next window．
Q：Where does this conversation most probably take place？
A．at a luggage counter
B．at an elementary school
C．at a bookstore
D．at a post office
最使人不解的是词组a book of stamps，如果只听之字片语，而忽略了关键词，那么，作出的只能是错误选择。a book of stamps指的是集邮册，因此，对话肯定发生在邮局。D是正确选择。
二、职业听力试题中的职业一般指对话双方中的一方或对话中所提及的第三者的职业。对话双方的女士或男士从事什么职业，在对话中是不表露的，而是隐含在对话的内容中，要求听者根据其对话内容，尤其是与相关职业紧密相连的关键词进行判断。例如：
例4：
W：What kind of work do you like to do most if you had the chance？
M ：If I were going to change my line ofwork，I would probably make a dramatic change．I would not live in a city．I would move to the country，probably be more involved with nature and with anim- als．
Q：Which of the following would the man choose to be？
A．dram atist B．an actor C．a worker D．a farm er
对话中没有直接阐明男士要选择的职业，而是以含蓄的方式，即“not live in thecity”，“move to the country”，“involved with nature and with animals”判断出他想当农民的愿望，因而D为正确答案。
例5：
W：The drain is clogged again and there'swater all over the bathroom floor．
M ：We'll have to call Mr．Morris right away．
Q：What job does Mr．Morris probably have？
A．laundry worker B．plum ber
C．carpenter D．train conductor
女方说的是发生了什么问题，男方说他们只得打电话叫Mr．Morris来。要解决Mr．Morris的职业问题，必须弄清发生的是什么问题。
由女方所说的关键词“drain”和“clog”，我们可以判断B为正确选择。
地点、职业题是六级听力试题比较容易的试题，所用的词汇和句型非常有限，涉及的面也有限，只要考生能够收集并熟悉了这些词汇和句型，以及这种关键词的解题方法，得分并不难。
