drop和fall都可以表示人或物从高处掉到低处，有相同之处，也有不同之处。
1）drop和fall都可作不及物动词，表示“掉下、落下”，此时，它们可互换。如：
An apple dropped ／fell from the tree．苹果从树上掉下来了。
The glass dropped ／fell on the ground．杯子掉在了地上。
2）drop也可用作及物动词，意为“使……掉下”，而fall不能。表示无意或故意“掉下”某物，或故意“跌倒”时，用drop，不用fall。如：
The Class 2 runner dropped his stick on the ground．二班的运动员不小心把接力棒掉在了地上。
He dropped his shoes on the floor．他把鞋扔在地上。
She was tired and dropped herself into the chair．她非常累，重重地往椅子上一坐。
3）在表示气温、价格“下降”时，drop和fall可通用。如：
The temperature has suddenly dropped ／fallen．温度已突然下降。
The price of tomatoes has dropped ／fallen by five cents．西红柿的价格，已经降了五分钱。
4）fall可用连系动词，意为“变得”，后常接形容词asleep，ill等作表语。如：
She fell ill as soon as she got to London．她一到伦敦就生起病来。
