指示代词有this，that，these，those，可以作主语、定语、宾语、表语等。如：
Are these your chairs？（these作主语）这些是你们的椅子吗？
I don't like this TV set．I like that one．（this和that作定语）我不喜欢这台电视机。我喜欢那一台。
注意：
1．this ／these一般指空间或时间上较近的人或物；that ／those一般指时间或空间上较远的人或物。如：
This is a pen and that is a pencil．这是钢笔，那是铅笔。
We are busy these days．这些天我们很忙。
2．this ／these可指后面要谈到的事。而that ／those指前面提到过的事。如：
He had a bad cold．That is why he didn't come to the meeting．他患了重感冒。这就是他没来参加会议的原因。
3．打电话时，常用that询问对方是“谁”，用this介绍自己。如：
—Is that Mr Black speaking？你是布莱克先生吗？
—Yes，who's that？是的，你是谁？
—This is Mike．我是迈克。
