Police officers in one part of England are exchanging their cars for the bus,to cut down on expense and to improve efficiency.0 G
Most of the buses are double deckers and police officers will be encouraged to sit on the top deck.00 A
Officers have been issued with timetables so that they can avoid long waits at bus stops.A police inspector said he did not want them waiting around thirty to forty minutes for a bus as this would clearly be a waste of police time. 21 “If a bus is full,we will have to stand or wait for another one,”he said.
Officers in uniform, detectives and traffic wardens will all use buses during a six month trial of the scheme. 22 However, buses would be used when officers are involved in non-urgent routine business such as going to take statements or when returning from court appointments.
Senior police officers believe that the scheme will be effective in cutting down crime on public transport and will lead to a reduction in spending by the police force.23
A policewoman said:“I am all in favour of the idea.24
If it's good enough for them,it's good enough for us.”
The transport manager for the local bus company which is sponsoring the scheme said:“This scheme will help the police and give peace of mind to the travelling public. We are hoping that the scheme will become permanent(持久的).”25
A.It is thought that if they sit here, this will help to discourage crime as they will be able to see and to be seen clearly.
B.The scheme will make life safer not only for passengers but also for our bus drivers.
C.Obviously buses will not be used when officers are responding to emergency calls.
D.We have always found the scheme very successful in the past.
E.However,he did not expect the police to be treated differently from the rest of the public.
F.It is good for the public, who will be able to see us and talk to us on the buses.
G.They are to be allowed to travel free on buses in Northampton upon production of their identity card.

E.The first theme park F.See Ancient Egypt |
26 For many years,it has been a tradition in many parts of the world for there to be a fair that comes to town during public holidays.During religious festivals like Easter or the Day of the Dead, there was a carnival(狂欢节)atmosphere in many towns as fairgrounds appeared for a few days just outside the town, and people came to try their luck or just to have fun.But slowly these temporary fairs are being replaced more permanent sites, usually near big cities, where people can pay to have fun a year round.
27 Opened in 1955,Disneyland at Anaheim in California is regarded by many as the original fun park.Visitors were GREeted by characters from Disney films and the daily procession of Mickey Mouse and his friend is still a marvellous sight for people of all ages. The rides and attractions were all based on these characters.
28 Nowadays, such parks can be found all over the world:indeed, it is becoming hard to avoid them.Parks that are successful can make millions and the creators are desperately looking for ways to improve their attractions.Special events, such as unforgettable firework displays, are organized in order to bring in the crowds.Creating a theme park involves huge amounts of money, and the managers cannot afford to relax.
29 A trip to a fun park is not complete without something to really scare you.A 360roller coaster is nothing special these days. For real thrills, try the Euro-Mir in Germany which is a roller coaster that looks like a space station.Or there's Oblivion,at Alton Towers in England, which takes you headfirst into a dark hole filled with smoke. It doesn't last long, but three minutes of nightmare is enough for me.
30 For people like myself who find it very easy to resist the more frightening rides, there are plenty of other ways to pass the time.At the Luxor Hotel in Las Vegas, there is a glass copy of the tomb of Tutankhamun.Or rather, the hotel is inside the tomb! There are shops and restaurants and imi- tation temples, but best of all there is the possibility of a boat trip down the Nile. How's that for a way of getting rid of the memory of that awful roller coaster?
(B)

Some people say that the best way to reduce the body's mid-section is to do stomach exer- cise. Many people believe that when specific muscles(肌肉)are exercised, the fatty tissues(组织)in the immediate area are“burned up”.The truth is that exercise burns fat from all over the body and not from one specific area,no matter what kind of exercise.Of course,if you reduce the fat throughout your body ,you will certainly see results around your waist too.
It is said that you need to exercise only twice a week in order to keep a sufficient level of physical fitness.Studies conducted by American scientists show that unexercised muscles lose their strength very quickly. After 48to 72hours,you must use the muscles again to reestablish the good physical effects. And what does that mean to you?American scien- tists concluded that while daily exercise is most helpful, every other day, three days a week will keep a sufficient level of physical fitness.
Is it true that you burn more calories running one mile than walking the same distance? The answer is no.The truth is that you use the same amount of energy whether you walk or run the mile, since in both cases you are moving the same weight the same distance. The speed does not matter.Of course,if you run rather than walk for 30 minutes, you will cover more distance, and therefore burn more calories.
If your breathing doesn't return to normal within minutes after you finish exercising, you have exercised too much.Five minutes or so after exercising, your breathing should be normal, your heart shouldn't be beating, and you shouldn't be exhausted.

RAISING A LOST WONDER
A giant stone torso—it is later weighed in at 12 tonnes—is lifted from the water. No one knows for sure how many years it lay on the sea bed but it was many hundreds. The torso, which is from the statue of a pharaoh(法老),is part of an impressive collection of treasure that has been discovered in the harbour at Alexandria, northern Egypt.
In May 1995a combined French and Egyptian team of divers were asked by the Egyptian Ministry of Antiquities to investigate the area surrounding Alexandria, now a port on the Nile and once one of the GREatest cities of the classical world.Hundreds of ancient Egyptian and Greek statues and monuments were found under the water. There were also many hundreds of pieces of rock, including around 20enormous granite blocks. Were these the ruins of the great lighthouse—the Pharos?
The lighthouse is believed to have been destroyed by an earthquake in the 14th century. The Arab rulers of Egypt had little interest in the Mediterranean and moved their capital to Cairo. They did not look after the Pharos. When the Arab traveller,Ibn Battuta, visited Alexandria in 1349he reported that the building could not be entered.Later that cen- tury,Alexandria's ruler,Mamelouk Qaitbay, built a fort on the site, and some of the remains of the lighthouse were used in the building.
How the statues got to the bottom of the harbour is still not known.Possibly they were thrown into the sea during the building of the fort,or they may have come from temples elsewhere on the coast. The identity of the pharaoh's statue is not yet known either.According to the chief archaeologist(考古专家),Jean Yves Empereur, they have a few ideas:“We found an arm not far from the colossus(巨像),and on the second to last day of the dig,a head was also found.”The remains are being studied by archaeologists who hope that they will help us to un- derstand better the history of Egypt's GREatest ancient city.
Alexander the GREat is said to have first thought of the lighthouse. The conquering leader made Alexandria the capital of his empire, but after his death at the age of 34,it was taken by Ptolemy, who created the last great Egyptian dynasty. The lighthouse itself was built during the rule of Ptolemy II between 297and 280BC under the direction of an Asiatic Greek called Sostratus. It was very large indeed and at the top of the tower was a giant lamp and a statue of Poseidon which was said to be visible 50km away. The lamp burning inside the Pharos became a symbol of Hellenic civilization.
42.How long have the ruins of the Pharos been underwater?
43.Why did the Arabs not look after the Pharos?
44.The fort was built ______ .
45.Why are archaeologists so interested in the site?
46.The lighthouse was built ______ .

Nancy's brother,Tony, had also gone to France now,and her mother made herself ill by worrying about him.Early in July he should be due for leave.I was on leave myself at the end of one of the four-months' cadet(幼子)courses, staying with the rest of Nancy's family at M aesyneuardd,a big Tudor house near Harlech. This was the most haunted house that I have ever been in,though the ghosts, with one exception, were not visible, except occasionally in the mirrors. They would open and shut doors, knock the shades off lamps, and drink the wine from the glasses at our elbows when we were not looking. The house belonged to an officer in the Second Battalion, whose ancestors had most of them died of drink. The visible ghost was a little yellow dog that would appear on the lawn in the early morning to announce deaths. Nancy saw it through the window that time.
The first Spanish influenza epidemic(流行病)began, and Nancy's mother caught it,but did not want to miss Tony's leave and going to the London theatres with him.So when the doctor came, she took quantities of aspirin, reduced her temperature, and pretended to be all right. But she knew that the ghosts in the mirrors knew the truth. She died in London on July 13th,a few days later. Her chief solace(安慰),as she lay dying, was that Tony had got his leave prolonged on her account.I was alarmed at the effect that the shock of her death might have on Nancy's baby. Then I heard that Siegfried had been shot through the head that same day while making a daylight patrol through long grass in No Man's Land; but not killed. And he wrote me a verse-letter from a London hospital beginning:I'd timed my death in action to the minute...
It is the most terrible of his war-poems.
Tony was killed in September.I went on mechanically at my cadet-battalion work. The new candidates for commissions were mostly Manchester cotton clerks and Liverpool shipping clerks—men with a good fighting record, quiet and well behaved. To forget about the war,I was writing Country Sentiment(停战),a book of romantic poems and ballads.
In November came the Armistice.I heard at the same time of the deaths of Frank Jones-Bateman,who had gone back again just before the end,and Wilfred Owen, who often used to send me poems from France.Armistice-night hysteria did not touch overseas style. The news sent me out walking alone along the dyke above the marshes of Rhuddlan(an ancient battlefield),cursing and sobbing and thinking of the dead.
Siegfried's famous poem celebrating the Armistice began:
Everyone suddenly burst out singing,
And I was filled with such delight
As prisoned birds must find in freedom...
But“everyone”did not include me.
51.According to the writer,the invisible ghosts ______ .
52.The doctor who came to see Nancy's mother ______ .
53.The writer mentions the deaths of ______ .
54.The writer,at the time,was ______ .
55.When the Armistice was announced the writer ______ .

June 27,1880,was a happy day for the Kellers. The Kellers had a baby—a fine healthy girl they named Helen. The good news spread quickly in the small Alabama town where they lived.
(56)Baby Helen was a delight to her mother and father. They laughed and played together as Helen began discovering the world around her. Then the sickness struck.
It was a short illness. No one knew for certain exactly what it was. Some of the neighbours said it was scarlet fever.Others believed it was an evil curse. (57)The sickness disappeared as fast as it had come. But it left 18-month-old Helen Keller blind and deaf and unable to speak.
(58)The world closed in on her like a black cloud.Gone was the gentle voice of her mother.Gone was the soft Alabama light coming in through her bedroom window.Gone were all the faces she had come to know and love.
Helen slipped into a cold, frightening world. She knew she was alive. She still felt hunger and pain and fear. But in a single night her world had gone black and silent and lonely.
Young Helen became a“wild child.”That's what people called her—wild . (59)She fought back against her blindness and deafness like a caged animal.Sometimes in a fit of anger she kicked and screamed out at the things around her.
(60)Yet at other times she was strangely calm and peaceful. She learned how to let people know what was on her mind. She worked out her own sign language. And she tried all she could to understand what had happened to her.
