这条习语源自牌戏。打牌时采取欺骗的手段，把最大的牌A藏到衣袖里。现在比喻“留有一手,有锦囊妙计”。例如：

字面意义为：对于自己手中的牌正确处理，现在比喻“办事高明，善于利用机会，搞得不错”。其反义短语是“play one’s cards wrong /badly”。例如：

如果搞得好的话，这笔生意我们可以赚很多钱。
stack/pack/fix/put up the cards 洗牌作弊以欺骗某人
按字面意义，stack是“洗牌，作弊”的意思。其比喻意义为“于己有利，耍花招”。常在后边添加in one’s favor（处于有利地位）或against someone（处于不利地位）。例如：

turn up trumps摸到王牌
这条习语源自牌戏。习语中的trump是打桥牌时确定的桥牌王牌花色，或叫“主牌”，其他花色叫副牌。主牌比副牌大。打牌时摸到几张主牌，当然对赢牌很有帮助了。因此持牌人的心情也就特别好。现在比喻“（某人）意外地友善,意外地顺利或成功”。例如：
My father turned up trumps and lent me the money to go on holiday.我的父亲竟然很好说话，借钱给我去度假。
throw /fling up one’s cards 把牌都扔出去
玩纸牌时，应该一张一张地出牌，如果一下都扔出去，就表示认输了。现比喻“放弃计划，认输，屈服”。例如：
He threw up his cards finally. 他终于认输了。
