阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。

A

There is much discussion today about whether economic growth is desirable. At an earlier period, our desire for material wealth may have been justified. Now, however, this desire for more than we need is causing serious problems. Even though we have good intentions, we may be producing too much, too fast.

Those who criticize economic growth argue that we must slow down. They believe that society is approaching certain limits on growth. These include the fixed supply of natural resources, the possible negative(负面的) effects of industry on the natural environment, and the continuing increase in the world's population. As society reaches these limits, economic growth can no longer continue, and the quality of life will decrease.

People who want more economic growth, on the other hand, argue that even at the present growth rate there are still many poor people in the world. These proponents of economic growth believe that only more growth can create the capital needed to improve the quality of life in the world. Furthermore, they argue that only continued growth can provide the financial resources required to protect our natural surroundings from industrialization.

This debate over the desirability of continued economic growth is of vital importance to business and industry. If those who argue against economic growth are correct, the problems they mention cannot be ignored. To find a solution, economists and the business community must pay attention to these problems and continue discussing them with one another.

56. According to those who argue against economic growth we must slow down for the following reasons except that  ________.

A suicide bomber wounded 41 US soldiers in the northern Iraqi town, the US military said. None of the injuries are life-threatening,” said Gate, adding that it appeared to be a suicide bomb attack.

A US soldier and an Iraqi policeman were killed in separate attacks. Brigadier General Mark Kimmitt, spokesman for the US Army in Iraq, said the soldier—from the 101st Airborne Division—was killed in a drive-by shooting in the northern city of Mosul, which has seen an upsurge(高潮) in attacks on US troops. “There was a drive-by shooting by four Iraqis. They shot and killed him.” Kimmitt said.

Among the many creatures in the world, mice are surprisingly similar genetically to humans.

Two years ago, a group of scientists published the sequence(序列) of the human genome(基因组). The same group—from the National Human Genome Research Institute(NHGRI)in the US—announced that it has almost finished the genome map of mice.

Different from genes, a genome is the collection of all genetic material. Some experts have compared a draft sequence to a map of a city that shows major highways but lacks further details. And NHGRI has already found amazing similarities between mice and man.

Mice have basically the same number of genes about 30,000 as humans. Moreover, human genome is made up of 3.1 billion base pairs(碱基对). And the mouse genome has about 2.7 billion base pairs, so it is just 15 percent smaller in size than human.

“The mouse carries almost the same set of genes as the human but can be used in lab research. So this information will allow researchers to gain information into the work of many human genes,” NHGRI said in a statement. “For most human illnesses, important information has come from the study of mouse models,” the statement added.

The institute said that its findings will help them to understand how genes help to cure those illnesses in humans such as cancer. It should also help to improve tests and treatments.

68. The main idea of the passage is that ________.

    A. mice are similar to humans in genes

    B. mice have helped a little to cure human illnesses

    C. scientists have finished the genome map of mice

    D. human  beings  are  completely different from mice in many ways

69. It can be inferred from the passage that ________.

    A. scientists began to study the human genome two years ago

    B. human's genes are ten times larger than those of mice basically

    C. the study of mouse models will help doctors to cure many human illnesses

    D. scientists in other countries are not as active in the study of genome as those in Japan

70. From the underlined sentence in paragraph 3, we know________.

    A. a sequence looks just like a map of a city, which has a lot of high-ways

    B. scientists have learned more about the sequence, but known less about its details

    C. scientists show no interest in the study of the details of the sequence

    D. scientists are interested in pictures when doing some research

71. Judging from the passage, ________.

    A. mice are popular in the world

Children without access(通道)to computers at home may be educationally disadvantaged even if their classrooms are computer-equipped, a senior education expert had warned.

The Associate Dean of Education at the University of Western Sydney, Toni Downs, says the school system has failed to respond to the challenges of new technologies and this could increase the growing gap between children from technology-rich and technology-poor families.

“Unless careful thought is put into how children use computers, schools could be making the situation worse because the children with the confidence and skills put themselves forward and in an unregulated environment they dominate(支配)computing.” She says.

Downs says this doesn't mean families have to buy their own computer but they should access the equipment through libraries or other public organizations, including schools.

She says one of the main difficulties for children without a home computer is finding time to explore the use of the computer on their own.

Unpublished figure from the Bureau of Statistics(统计局)shows that wealthy families are now more likely to be technology-rich, with computer ownership rising to 42 percent in households with an income of between $44,000  and $66,000.

Children aged between 5 and 17 are the biggest users of home computers. The most popular use for home computers is playing games, followed by educational activities.

The head of the School of Educational Psychology, Measurement and Technology at the University of Sydney, Professor Peter Cuttance, says students without access to computers at home would be disadvantaged.

“We are now moving into an environment where more advanced schools are making home-school access available,” he says. “Within the next five years large number of students will be accessing homework materials via(通过) their home computers.”

72. The importance for children to have  access to computers at home is  ____.

    A. schools don't have enough computers for every student

    B. the changing world and technology are well beyond school education

    C. students without computers will become poorer and poorer

    D. computer education in school is sometimes given wrongly

73. Which of the following statements is True?

    A. Schools usually don't care about how to teach children in using computers.

    B. By using computers in school the gap between poor children and rich ones becomes wider.

    C. Only the children who have confidence in themselves can use computers.

    D. Children without access to computers at home may be educationally disadvantaged.

74. We can infer from the passage that ________.

    A. most children use computers for games rather than learning their lessons

    B. families with an income of $66,000 are the biggest users of computers

    C. the  poorer  you  are,  the  more knowledge you will gain

    D. rich families own 10 percent of the country's computers

75. What's the main point of Professor Peter Cuttance's words?

    A. Everything done by computers will become very simple.

    B. Knowledge about computers will be more advanced.

    C. Homework for students will be mainly about computers.

    D. Computers will be an important way of accessing information.
