Part III 综合(40%)
1.阅读理解。
Passage One
Some of the old worries about artificial intelligence were closely linked to the question of whether computers could think. The first massive electronic computers, capable of rapid computation and little or no creative activity, were soon dubbed“electronic brains”.A reaction to this terminology quickly followed:to put them in their place, computers were called“high speed idiots”,in an effort to protect human vanity. But not everyone realized the implications of the high-speed idiot tag.It has not been pointed out often enough that even the human idiot is one of the most intelligent life forms on earth. If the early computers were even that intelligent,it was already a remarkable state of affairs.
One consequence of speculation about the possibility of computer thought was that we were forced to examine with new care the idea of thought in general. It soon became clear that we were not sure what we meant by such terms as thought and thinking. We tend to assume that
human beings think, some more than others, though we often call people thoughtless or unthinking.Dreams cause a problem, partly because they usually happen outside our control. They are obviously some type of mental experience, but are they a type of thinking? And the question of non-human life forms adds further problems. Many of us would maintain that some of the higher animals—dogs, cats, apes, and so on—are capable of at least basic thought, but what about fish and insects? It is certainly true that the higher mammals show complex brain activity when tested with the appropriate equipment. If thinking is demonstrated by evident electrical activity in the brain, then many species are capable of thought.Once we have formulated clear ideas on what thought is in biological creatures,it will be easier to discuss the question of thought in artifacts. And what is true of thought is also true of the many other mental processes. One of the immense benefits of a research is that we are being forced to scrutinize, with new rigor, the working of the human mind.
It is already clear that machines have superior mental abilities to many life forms. No fern or oak tree can play chess as well as even the simplest digital computer;nor can frogs weld car bodies as well as robots. It seems that, viewed in terms of intellect, the computer should be set well above plants and most animals.Only the higher animals can compete with computers with regard to intellect and even then with diminishing success.
1)According to the first paragraph, human beings'attitude towards the early computers can best be described as __________.
A.indifferent B.ambiguous C.contemptuous D.hostile
2)In the author's opinion ,even if the term“high-speed idiot”was appropriate for the early computers,__________.
A.they were worthy of our pride
B.they were not able to think even like a human idiot
C.they could never be compared to human brains
D.they were still not capable of any human thought
3)The second paragraph attempts to tell us that__________.
A.mental abilities are characteristic of humans only
B.we are still not certain about the difference between thought and thinking
C.all animal species are in fact capable of thought
D.we need to research further to get an appropriate definition of the term“thought”
4)The word“scrutinize”can be best replaced by__________.
A.improve B.examine closely
C.experiment with D.make use of
5)It can be concluded from the passage that__________.
A.computers will be capable of thought in the near future
B.computers think in a different way from human brains
C.computers can never compete with humans in thinking
D.computers possessed the ability to think at the very beginning
Passage Two
Computer have been taught to play not only checkers, but also championship chess, which is a fairly accurate yardstick for measuring the computer's proGREss in the ability to learn from experience.
Because the game requires logical reasoning, chess would seem to be perfectly suited to the computer. All a programmer has to do is give the computer a program evaluating the consequences of every possible response to every possible move, and the computer will win every time.In theory this is a sensible approach;in practice it is impossible.Today,a powerful computer can analyze 40,000moves a second.
That is an impressive speed. But there are an astronomical number of possible moves in chess—literally trillions.Even if such a program were written(and in theory it could be,given enough people and enough time),there is no computer capable of holding that much data.
Therefore,if the computer is to compete at championship level,it must be programmed to function with less than complete data.It must be able to learn from experience,to modify its own program,to deal with a relatively unstructured situation—in a word,to“think”for itself. In fact, this can be done.Chess-playing computers have yet to defeat world champion chess play- ers,but several have beaten human players of only slightly lower ranks. The computers have had programs to carry them through the early, mechanical stages of their chess games. But they have gone on from there to reason and learn, and sometimes to win the game.
There are other proofs that computers can be programmed to learn, but this example is sufficient to demonstrate the point.Granted, winning a game of chess is not an earthshaking event even when a computer does it.But there are many serious human problems which can be fruitfully approached as games. The Defense Department uses computers to play war games and work out strategies for dealing with international tensions.Other problems—international and interpersonal relations, ecology and economics, and the ever-increasing threat of world famine—can perhaps be solved by the joint efforts of human beings and truly intelligent computers.
6)The purpose of creating chess-playing computers is __________.
A.to win the world chess champion
B.to pave the way for further intelligent computers
C.to work out strategies for international wars
D.to find an accurate yardstick for measuring computer proGREss
7)Today,a chess-playing computer can be programmed to __________.
A.give trillions of responses in a second to each possible move and win the game
B.function with compete data and beat the best players
C.learn from chess-playing in the early stage and go on to win the game
D.evaluate every possible move but may fail to give the right response each time
8)For a computer to“think”,it is necessary to__________.
A.manage to process as much data as possible in a second
B.program it so that it can learn from its experiences
C.prepare it for chess-playing first
D.enable it to deal with unstructured situations
9)The author's attitude towards the Defense Department is __________.
A.critical B.unconcerned C.positive D.negative
10)In the author's opinion,__________.
A.winning a chess game is an unimportant event
B.serious human problems shouldn't be regarded as playing a game
C.ecological problems are more urgent to be solved
D.there is hope for more intelligent computers
