2.Listen to the talk and write as many benefits and disadvantages as you can of China joining the WTO in the fewest possible words.
There are,of course, many advantages for China after she joins the WTO.For a start, the increase in foreign trade will improve the economy. Foreign trade companies will have access to a larger market for their goods. On the contrary,if a country cannot sell its products,or services, the economy of the country will be very weak, and the people poor. This,I reckon,is the main benefit.
At the moment, however, some state-run companies are not efficient, and make little profit, mainly because their goods are of a poor quality. Therefore, they're going to have to improve the quality of their goods to encourage people to buy them. They will probably have to reduce their workforce, too,so as to cut their costs, and invest the money in developing their business. This will mean that some people will lose their jobs.
I guess education will change too, because people will have to be trained in modern working practices—team work, communication skills, that sort of things.I'm not sure if this'll be a good thing or not.I guess we'll have to wait and see.
English skills, for obvious reasons, will become more important.Still, who knows,Chinese might become a world language. Then of course there's the changing of people's attitudes, especially amongst young people,as a result of the influence from foreign cultures. This is OK so long as people only accept the good parts of foreign cultures, but this is unlikely to happen, and may lead to more divorces, unmarried parents and all kinds of social problems.
I don't know.I guess on the whole the WTO entry should largely benefit China,at least in the long term.
3.Listen to the passage and provide a brief answer for the following questions.
When I was young my father always told me how important it was to get on in life and be asuccess.I think he wanted me to be a doctor or an engineer or something like that. And I can remem- ber how disappointed he was when I left school early and started work as a secretary.
It was a small,badly-run company, and when I went there they told me the job wasn't difficult and I would soon pick it up.At the beginning I liked the job,but as time passed the work started to take up more of my time and I found I was working late in the evenings and even on weekends. And in ad- dition to this I had to put up with poor working conditions and a low salary—I earned just enough to get by—and there were no promotion prospects at all.All this really got me down. And then I started to wonder if I was really cut out for this kind of work—it didn't really suit me or my particular abilities.
Then one day,I went to see my boss to ask for some time off work.I needed to visit my mother, who wasn't well at the time.I have to say that I didn't get on with my boss very well.Anyway,he refused my request point-blank.He said it was out of the question and he didn't want to hear another word.I tried explaining but I just couldn't get through to him.He wouldn't listen. So I walked out of the office. That was the last straw. The next day I handed in my resignation, and I said to myself I would never put myself in that kind of position a- gain.I decided to return to school and go in for law.I graduated from London University and now I'm starting to make my way in the world.
So was my father right? Is it important to get on in the world?Well,in some ways it is,but it depends on how you measure success and what you want to get out of life. After all, there are other things in life besides work.
