The final days of the year are a good period of expectation for theatergoers and directors, due to the openings of many blockbusters centralized in it. One of the long-awaited blockbuster s, “Curse of the Golden Flower” directed by Zhang Yimou, has premiered internationally last week.
Some netizens critisized the film just told a vulgar story with some cyber stunts. And even more people consider the low-cut dresses that are worn by the actresses in the film are too avant-courier, so it seemes the dresses doesn’t coincide with the conservative attitudes of traditional Chinese people, especially in ancient time.
One year ago, there was a footage published on the Internet, “A murder case caused by a steamed bread”. It was just clipped some famous Chinese films to make a joking one in order to urge Chinese directors to shoot more far-reaching works. Now, some satirize “Curse of the Golden Flower” lures people to theater by a dozen of fleshy and white breasts, which can make a good comparison to steamed breads. They thought they watched nonsense by some sexy actresses who exposed their breasts too much.

In 2001, “crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon”, directed by Ang Lee, won an Oscar for best foreign film. It seems to send a message that martial arts movies set in ancient dynasties can easily appeal to the tastes of Western audiences. And in the past couple of years, the films produced by China’s three best-known directors have undoubtedly reflected a belief that films of this kind were easy to get into the international market with handsome box office profits. The films were “The Hero”, “Ambush on All Sides”, “The Promise” and “The Banquet”.
Unfortunately, critics claim these films lack strong storylines and values. Among them, “Ambush on All Sides” is the worst one. It repeated a single story for four times in the film, which described two lovers said last words to each other on their escaping way.
Some even complained that the ticket price was too high, 150 yuan per adult. For an international blockbuster, the price may be inexpensive; but for a dozen of “steamed breads”, it is really considerable.
