陶毅简介，字斯咏，女，一八九六年生，湘潭人。她于一九一六年考入朱剑凡先生创办的周南女子中学师范二班，与著名的女革命家向警予同窗。
那时，陶斯咏和向警予一样，是一位思想十分开放激进的女性，也是新民学会中的一员出色的女将，被称为“周南三杰”之一，与毛泽东过从甚密。毛氏创办文化书社时，她是三个拿出十块银元的资助者中的一个（易礼容只拿了一块银元）。在新民学会初期的多次讨论中，她是主张“教育救国”的。后来，她也支持毛泽东“改造中国与世界”的口号。文化书社成立后，他们在一九二一年元旦有一次难忘的集会，她和毛泽东等一班志同道合的人，冒着漫天风雪，在周南的院子里摄影留念。这张珍贵的照片，如今还陈列在长沙市周南中学。在一九一八和一九一九年毛两次离开长沙的时间，毛给陶写过一些信，现在能查到的就有五件（内容当然只是片断）。向警予赴法勤工俭学后，也给陶斯咏写过信，劝她力促北大开女禁，到那里去深造。但陶其时已经在周南留校任教，只在一九二一年去南京金陵女大进修过一次。毛泽东在上海参加“一大”后返长途中，还曾经专程到南京停留，探望斯咏，情谊之深可见。此后，毛泽东走上了专职革命家的道路，而陶斯咏则仍回周南任教，两人从此便聚少离多。
陶氏后来一直在周南教书。当时同样是文化书社重要成员的彭璜，疯狂地追求过她，而她却拒绝了彭，终身未婚，不幸于一九三一年早逝。大概由于她始终是个“教书匠”，故留下的资料不多。
