有学生问,在“You're _________ capable of solving the problem ______I am.”这个句子里,是选“no more...than”还是选“not more...than”?
“no more...than”means“not...just as...not”,含有消极、否定的意味。
He is no more diligent than you.
He is no more a teacher than we are.
A home without love is no more a home than a man without soul.
“not more...than”means“not so...as”,含有积极、肯定的意味,表示程度上的差异。
This book is not more interesting than that one.
Mary is not more careful than Rose.
因此应选“no more...than”。
另外两个短语“no more than”与“not more than”也不同。
“no more than”=only,言其少,译为“不过,只有,仅仅”;“not more than”=at most,可译为“不超过,至多”。例如:
He is no more than a puppet.
He has learned no more than 100words.
He has learned not more than 100words.
