When TV news programs report war or diseases, the editors rarely use the most horrifying pictures of dead or wounded victims(受害者) because they don't want to upset their viewers. Even so, viewers are usually warned in advance that they may find some of these scenes disturbing, so they can look away if they choose. But the men and women whose job is to record those scenes, the TV cameramen, have no such choice. It is their duty to witness(目击) the horrors of the world and record them, no matter how unpleasant they may be. As a result, it is one of the most dangerous, exposed and emotionally taxing jobs the world has to offer.

Today, the demand for their work is rising. The explosion of satellite broadcasting and 24-hour news in recent years has created an almost insatiable(不能满足的) demand for TV information. But major broadcasters have never had enough staff(人员) to meet the worldwide demand for up-to-date pictures, so increasingly they turn to freelance(自由职业的) TV cameramen.

These freelance cameramen are independent operators tied to no particular organization. They will work for any company that hires them, for just a few hours or for several weeks in a war zone. But if the freelance cameraman is injured in the course of the job, the TV company is not responsible for him. The freelance must survive on his own.

TV will always need hard, vivid(逼真的) moving pictures which are fresh, but these companies feel uncomfortable with large numbers of employees on their books. Explains Nik Cowing, once a foreign editor for Britain's Channel 4 News and now a BBC news presenter.

He says,By hiring freelancers, they can buy the skills they need only when they need them. It also enables them to reduce the risk.

Fifty years ago, on February 28, 1953, two young men rushed into a Cambridge pub in Britain and announced that they had found the secret of life! Nobody in the pub believed them, but British Francis Crick and American James Watson were telling the truth. The two men--then only 35 and 23 respectively (separately)--had indeed discovered the structure(结构) of DNA(脱氧核糖核酸).

DNA is in every cell of our bodies. It contains the information needed to construct and operate humans.

DNA is one long fibre--like a hair, but thinner and longer. It is organized into strings() of genes. These genes carry the instructions needed to make all the different cells in our bodies. They also determine how the cells will be put in order.

So, DNA is responsible for how many fingers you have, where your legs are placed on your body, the color of your eyes and even how to build your brain.

Crick and Watson found that DNA was structured as a double helix(螺旋状物), which looks like a ladder that's been twisted(扭曲)along its length.

Their discovery changed science and the world. Scientists can now decipher(破译)the DNA of humans and other species. Animals and crop genes are changed to create different characteristics. Gene treatment has been used to treat diseases. In disasters and accidents, DNA helps people identify the dead.

Watson and Crick were awarded the 1962 Nobel Prize in the category(种类) of medicine or physiology (生理学) for their GREat discovery.

But, the DNA story is far from over. Scientists are still working out the details of how DNA is copied so quickly and accurately (准确地) and exploring more use of DNA.

71. The passage mainly tells us ________ .

    A. DNA was discovered by two young men in 1953

    B. Scientists are still working in many ways

    C. Nobody believed what the two men announced

    D. DNA is one long fibre-like a pencil, thinner and longer

72. From the passage we can know that______.

    A. DNA is a long hair

    B. DNA also determines how the cells will be arranged

    C. DNA can not be used to treat diseases and help identifying the dead

    D. DNA is not responsible for how many fingers you have

73. Which of the following is NOT true?

    A. They both won the Nobel Prize in 1962.

    B. They found that DNA was structured as a double helix looking like a ladder

    C. Gene treatment has been used to treat all the diseases.

    D. DNA can determine how many fingers you have.

74. The underlined word gene in paragraph 3 means ________ in Chinese.

    A. 连接         B. 组织     C. 关系         D. 基因

75.  Which do you think of the following is probably suitable for this passage?

    A. The Genes Project

    B. The Discovery of Genes

    C. The Speech of A Pub

    D. The Winners of Nobel Prize
