第三部分:阅读理解(共20小题;每小题2分,满分40分)

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。

A

When Mt Vesuvius erupted(喷发)in 79 A.D., it destroyed the cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum. The first excavators(挖掘者)were the people of Pompeii, who, returning to their city when the eruption had stopped dug down through the roofs of their buried homes and salvaged(抢救)their furniture and belongings. The tunnels they drove through the solidified(凝固的)ash can still be seen in places. But a time came when Pompeii and Herculaneum were forgotten. Throughout the Middle Ages these two buried cities were not disturbed, and it was not until 1709 that an Austrian prince sank a shaft at Herculaneum and then, by means of underground tunnels, robbed the city of its treasures. In 1729 systematic excavation began on the same site.

From the end of the eighteenth century to the present day, digging has gone on practically continuously, though slowly, and often with few resources. Perhaps this slowness has not been entirely a disadvantage, since it has resulted in large, untouched sections of both cities being let preserved for modern, scientific excavation. Archaeological(考古学的)techniques have improved so much in the last fifty years that a site can now be shown far more archaeological information that was possible before. Today most of Pompeii and a substantial section of Herculaneum have been cleared. They are the best-known archaeological sites in Europe, and the most wonderful. For here, and nowhere else on earth, are ancient cities in which life did not die out but was suddenly arrested. Behind these walls, as one writer has said, lies an ancient Italian town, stilled in a moment of time. To enter the gates of this city is to walk 2000 years into the past.

56. The main purpose of the first paragraph is to describe the________.

    A. early excavations of Pompeii and Herculaneum

        B. attempts made by the inhabitants

        to recover their possessions

        C. sudden eruption of Mt Vesuvius

        D. excavations at Pompeii and Her-

        culaneum during the Middle Ages

57. The author believes that the slow-paced excavations of the eighteenth century   were________.

    A. an advantage to modern civilization

    B. troubling to the people of Herculaneum

    C. an advantage to modern-day archaeologists

    D. due to the activities of thieves

58. The underlined phrase means that ________.

    A. the city has been wonderfully preserved

    B. the inhabitants were shocked by the eruption

    C. the author does not know the extent of the damage to the city

    D. the Pompeii excavation site is deserted and silent

59. What is the main purpose of the passage?

    A. To explain how the people of Pompeii and Herculaneum lived

    B. To describe modern archaeological techniques

    C. describe the destruction of the cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum

    D. To explain how two ancient cities are rediscovered

B

It was very hot in the small courtroom and everybody was feeling sleepy. After a tiring morning the officials were anxious to get off to lunch and even the judge must have taken a good rest when the last case was tried. A short, middle-aged man with gray hair and small blue eyes was now standing before him. The man had a foolish expression on his face and he kept looking around as if he was trying hard to understand what was going on.

The man was charged(指控)with breaking into a house and stealing a cheap watch. The woman who had seen the man stealing something did not give a very clear picture of what had happened. She seemed to have seen a man outside the house one night, but on being questioned further, she said that she was not sure whether this was the man. The judge considered the matter for a short time and then announced that as there was no real proof, the man was set free. He said that he refused to consider the case, then rose to go. At the same time, the man looked very foolish. It was clear that he had not understood a thing. Noticing this, the judge paused for a moment and then the man said suddenly, Excuse me, sir, but do I have to give the watch back or not?

Will it matter if you don't take your breakfast? Recently a test was given in the United States. Those tested included people of different ages, from 12 to 83. During the experiment, these people were given all kinds of breakfasts, and sometimes they got no breakfast at all. Special tests were set up to see how well their bodies worked when they had eaten a certain kind of breakfast. The result shows that if a person eats a proper breakfast, he or she will work with better effect than if he or she has no breakfast. This fact appears to be especially true if a person works with his brains. If a student eats fruit, eggs, bread and milk before going to school, he will learn more quickly and listen with more attention in class. Contrary to what many people believe, if you don't eat breakfast, you will not lose weight. This is because people become so hungry at noon that they eat too much for lunch, and end up gaining weight instead of losing. You will probably lose more weight if you reduce your other meals.

64. During the test, those who were tested were given________.

    A. no breakfast at all

    B. very rich breakfast

    C. little food for breakfast

    D. different foods or none

65. The result of the test shows that______.

    A. breakfast has GREat effect on work and studies

    B. breakfast has little to do with a person's work

    C. a person will work better if he has simple breakfast

    D. those working with brains should have much for breakfast

66. The passage mentions that many people believe that if you don't eat breakfast,    you will________.

    A. lose weight     B. not lose or gain weight

    C. be healthier    D. gain a lot of weight

67. Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?

    A. Poor breakfasts affect those who work with their brains.

    B. Morning diet(节食)may cause one to get fatter.

    C. Having a big lunch and supper is of GREat value in weight-losing.

    D. Eating less in lunch and supper may help to lose weight.

D

Study this diagram and read the passage. Then answer the following questions.

ENERGY  PYRAMID

GREen plants, the first producers in a food chain, make up the first level of an energy pyramid. Plant-eating animals, the primary consumers, make up the second level. Each successive(相连接的) level of an energy pyramid shows the loss of energy by reducing the size of the pyramid from its base to its top. Each level contains only about ten percent of the energy of the level coming before it. Each level loses energy to surrounding environment, as well to the level above it.

68. In total mass and numbers, which level contains the most energy?

    A. Secondary flesh-eating animals.

    B. First consumers.

    C. Secondary consumers.

    D. First producers.

69. Which of these is the best example of a food chain?

    A. Grasssheephuman.

    B. Grasscowdeer.

    D. Pigsheepwolf.

70. Where do first producers get their energy?

    A. Flesh-eating animals.

    B. The sun.

    C. Plant-eating animals.

    D. Secondary producers.

71. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the energy pyramid?

    A. The number of producers and consumers is about the same.

    B. Most energy is stored as it moves upward through the energy pyramid.

    C. A good many first producers are needed to provide energy for a smaller group of consumers.

    D. More energy is produced at the top of the energy pyramid than at the bottom.

E

China is a Kingdom of Bicycle. Everyone rides a bike here. People ride it to school, to work, to the beaches and mountains. They think outdoor cycling will make them healthy and strong. Apart from this reason, riding provides protection against some pollution.

On the contrary, Americans are a people on the wheel. Wherever you go, you'll see cars. There are so many cars that there is a traffic jam here and there. Now, some Americans would not consider it a healthy way of life. As a matter of fact, it's quite disturbing to realize that they are being reduced to a group of machine-bound people. Some Americans are firmly opposed to the advancement of the crushing motor wheel. Does it mean we should give up automobiles altogether for bicycles? No. We should discourage the use of cars as much as possible to save our environment and the energy.

Everyone wants to reduce pollution. But the pollution problem is very serious. People operate motor vehicles and the exhaust from them causes a large percentage of all air pollution. On the other hand, the need for energy increases every day, and some sources of energy are being used up very quickly. Oil will last for no more than 40 years, while coal could last 300 years. The way we're heading is towards a world where people are going to go cold and hungry. Now in China many rich men live away from downtown. On holidays they go to some big cities and places of historical interest. So most of them choose to own cars. In a way, it will be more convenient for them.

72. What does the underlined word people mean in the first sentence of paragraph    2?

    A. Persons.         B. Nation, race.   C. All the citizens of a country.

    A. dislike owning cars

    B. oppose the development of vehicles

    C. can't live well without motor vehicles

    D. want to ride bicycles

74. What is the best title for the text?

    A. The Transportation in the world

    B. Reduce Bicycles

    C. Car or Bicycle

    D. Environment and Energy Crisis

75. Which of the following statements is TRUE?

    A. Pollution should be reduced.

    B. Americans should give up automobiles.

    C. The energy should not be saved.

    D. Bicycle will become main transportation in the world.
