I wonder how often your family has bought new furniture, curtains or kitchen equipment and then wondered how to dispose of the old items that still have quite a lot of life left in them.

It was in response to this situation that The Carpenters' Shop was opened in the town of Walsall, Staffordshire. Run by a team of church volunteers, the shop will collect any surplus, good-quality items and store them until they can be redistributed to the people who are needing those particular things.

Many have been helped through the scheme, including single parents, disabled people and the elderly, and those who have lost all their household possessions through a disaster such as a house fire.

Traditionally, mental tests have been divided into two types. Achievement tests are designed to measure acquired skills and knowledge, particularly those that have been clearly taught. The proficiency exams required by some states for high school graduation are achievement tests. Aptitude tests are designed to measure a person's ability to acquire new skills or knowledge. For example, vocational aptitude tests can help you decide whether you would do better as a mechanic or musician. However, all mental tests are in some sense achievement tests because they assume some sort of past learning or experience with certain objects, words, or situations. The difference between achievement and aptitude tests is one of deGREe and intended use.

A new study warns that about thirty percent of the world's people may not have enough water by the year 2025.

A private American organization called Population Action International did the new study. It says more than three hundred and thirty-five million people lack enough water now. The people live in twenty-eight countries. Most of the countries are in Africa or the Middle East.

PAI researcher Robert Engelman says by the year 2025, about three thousand million people lack water. At least 18 more countries are expected to have serious water problems. The demand for water keeps increasing. Yet the amount of water on Earth stays the same.

Mr. Engelman says the population in countries that lack water is growing faster than in other parts of the world. He says population growth in these countries will continue to increase.

The report says lack of water in the future may result in several problems. It may increase health problems. Lack of water often means drinking water is not safe. Mr. Engelman says there are problems all over the world because of diseases such as cholera that are carried in water.

Lack of water also may result in more international conflict (冲突). Countries may have to fight for water in the future. Some countries now get sixty percent of their fresh water from other countries. This is true of Egypt, the Netherlands, Cambodia, Syria, Sudan and Iraq. And the report says lack of water would affect the ability to improve their economies. This is because new industries often need a large amount of water when they are beginning.

The Population Action International study gives several solutions(解决办法)to the water problem. One way, it says, is to find ways to use water for more than one purpose. Another way is to teach people to be careful not to waste water. A third way is to use less water for agriculture.

The report also says long-term solutions to the water problem must include controls on population growth.

7. According to the report, how many countries will lack water by the year 2025?

   A. 18.          B. 28.      C. 40.          D. At least 46.

8. How many people will lack water by the year 2025?

   A. 335 million.    B. 3,000 million.       C. 3,035 million.       D. 355 million.

9. Which of the following is not true according to the passage?

   A. The amount of water on Earth  stays the same.

   B. The report gives three solutions to the water problem.

   C. Most of the countries that lack water belong to the developing ones.

   D. There's only one long-term solution to solve the water problem. That is controls on population growth.

10. What is the main idea of this article?

    A. Water shortage is quite serious in the world nowadays.

    B. PAI did a lot of study about water shortage.

    C. Water shortage will be a serious problem facing us in the near    future.

    D. Making use of sea water is the best way to solve the problem of water shortage.

Over the past 10 years, technologies that have combined computers with telephone have developed. Technologies such as PC fax programs and LAN fax servers (局域网传真服务器) have been used to improve fax communications. The latest computerbased technologies are new mechanisms (机制) which use IP (Internet Protocol , 因特网协议) to send faxes , that is , IP fax .

Traditional fax has a fairly simple usage model. First, the user inserts a document into the fax machine, enters the destination fax number and presses the start button on the machine. The sending machine dials the receiving fax machine. If it connects, the sending machine scans the document and sends it over the public switched telephone network (PSTN, 公共电话交换网) to the receiving machine. At the same time, the receiving machine receives the document and then prints it.

In IP fax system there are two basic transmission  modes:  store-and-forward

mode  and  real-time mode. Store-and-forward mode has been widely used. In this mode, the entire document is sent to a network-based server that stores it and then sends it to the destination. Real-time IP faxing is similar to traditional fax.    Real-time mode allows two fax machines to directly communicate through some  standard.

IP fax enables a fax document to be sent from one person to another. A fax machine or a computer can be used to send or receive the fax. IP fax also allows      e-mail to be used to receive faxes. This would enable users to receive faxes anywhere, anytime with an internet fax address.

15. The passage deals mainly with ______.  A. PC fax       B. IP fax

    C. document     D. new machines

16. In traditional fax, ______ can be used.

    A. even computers       B. LAN fax servers     C. e-mail   D. only fax machines

17. In paragraph 2, the word “inserts” can be replaced by ______.

    A. prints           B. presses          C. puts             D. uses
