A Fruit Juice Saves Lives

Before the mid-1700s, many sailors died while on long sea voyages. They died of a disease that we now call scurvy（坏血病）. At the time, no one knew what caused the illness.

Dr. James Lind, a physician from Scotland, began looking for the cause of scurvy. He found out that sailors on long sea voyages existed solely on a diet of beef and dry biscuits because fruits and vegetables would not stay fresh on long trips.

Dr. Lind believe that the sailors who developed scurvy did so because of a lack of what we now call vitamin C. He suggested that sailors be given juice from fruits called limes during long sea voyages. His advice was followed, and soon the outbreaks of scurvy stopped.
