In the land of the Gallas in the African highlands there lived a very wise old chief. Tribes people came to the chief whenever there was an argument they could not settle. The wise decisions of the chief always pleased everyone.
A poor deaf widow(寡妇) owned only a few goats. One day, while she was washing her clothes in the river, the goats wandered off. She did not have any idea where they had gone.
The woman set out to find the goats. She came to a farmer who was plowing his field. He, too, was deaf. If possible, he was even deafer than the old woman.
“Have you seen my goats?” asked the old woman.
The deaf farmer looked up from his plowing. He thought the woman was interested in his work. “Yes,” he said, “I have worked very hard today.” He pointed to his plowed field to show her how much work he had done.
The widow looked in the direction that he pointed. She did not hear what he said. She thought he was showing her the way that her goats had gone.
“Thank you very much,” said the widow. “If I find them, I will give you one.”
They nodded to each other and the widow went off, looking for her goats.
It so happened that the goats had traveled in this direction. She found them just over the hill. Unfortunately, one of the kids had injured its leg. The widow decided to give that kid to the farmer for his help. “After all,” she told herself, “the lions or jackals(豺) might have eaten them if I hadn’t found them before night.”
The old woman picked up the injured kid and carried it to the farmer. She held it out to him. “I have decided to give you this kid in return for your help,” she said.
