People used to say, “The hand that rocks the cradle(摇篮)rules the world.” And “Behind every successful man there is a woman.”

Both these sayings mean the same thing. Men rule the world, but their mothers and wives rule them.

Most American women wish to make their husbands and sons successful, but some of them want more for themselves. They want good jobs. When they work they want to be better paid. They want to be as successful as men.

The American women’s liberation movement was started by women who didn’t want to stand behind successful men. They wanted to stand beside men, with the same chance for success. They refused to work side by side with men who do the same work for a higher pay.

A liberated woman must be proud of being a woman and have confidence in herself. If somebody says to her, “You have come a long way, baby,” she will smile and answer, “Not nearly as far as I’m going to go, baby!”

Experiments about the spaceship Columbia have disproved a theory on the human nervous system which won an Austrian professor a Nobel Prize 79 years ago.

West German astronaut Ulf Merbold disproved the theory during test aboard the spaceship yesterday. His discovery is connected with the workings of the inner ear, the body’s balance mechanism(机构).

In 1914 Professor Robert Barany won the Nobel Prize for physiology and medicine when he announced that temperature differences affected the inner ear and caused the eyes to blink(眨眼). His theory was accepted by scientists.

But Merbold carried out tests to find if the theory was correct and shocked himself and space officials when he proved it wrong.

According to Barany’s theory the eyes would blink when cold air was blown into one ear and hot air blown into the other.

But if this theory was correct, such a movement would be impossible in zero gravity.

Both Merbold’s eyes continually blinked when the test was carried out.

In the United States today, a large group of people want a college education. However, everyone is not able to attend a four-year college, which is already too crowded. To give more people a chance to get a college education, some cities and towns have built junior colleges.

The junior college offers two-year course of study in a wide range of subjects. It prepares some young people to go on to a four-year college and trains others for jobs in business. Government, or industry.

Because junior colleges are built in cities, they can serve many people who live in a large community(社区). Those who can not afford to go to a four-year college can save enough to go to a junior college, the entrance fee of which is low. Students there can be day students and save money by living at home.

A junior college admits some high school graduates who would not be accepted at other schools. The four-year college turns down students whose high school grades are low. The junior college will often admit a student who might do well in taking a two-year course.

One of the goals of our country is to educate as many people as possible. The junior college is a school meant to serve many people. It puts a college education within the reach of a GREat number of people. Without these schools, many people would not be able to continue their education past high school.

68. In Paragraph One the writer tells us that junior colleges________.

A. offer a two-year course           B. are as good as four-year college

C. are badly needed                D. are too crowded

69. According to the passage, junior colleges_______.

A.      admit those whose high school grades are not very low

B.      can admit more students than four-year colleges

C.      offer very limited subjects

D.     only train students for jobs in business

70. It is known from the passage that_______.

A.      all high schools graduates can go to colleges

B.      junior colleges are built in cities while four-year colleges are in the country

C.      junior colleges are replacing four-year colleges

D.     junior colleges help to make college education popular

E
Sometimes people call each other “scaredy-cat”, but have you ever thought this expression? When a cat is frightened, its heart starts beating faster, its muscles get tense, and there are changes in the chemicals in its bloodstream. Although the cat doesn’t realize this, its body is getting ready for action. If the danger continues, the animal will do one of two things. It will defend itself, or it will run away as fast as it can.

Something like this also happens to people. When we are excited, angry, scared, or aroused by other emotions (feelings), our bodies go through many physical changes. Our hearts beat faster and our muscles get tense. All of these changes make us more alert and ready to react. We, too, get ready to defend ourselves or run.

Human beings, however, have a problem that animals never face. If we give way to our feelings and let them take over, we can get into trouble. Have you ever said something in anger or hit somebody and reGREtted it later? Have you ever shouted at a teacher, told somebody you were in love, and then wished later you had kept your mouth shut? It isn’t always wise to express your feelings freely.

Does this mean that it’s smarter always to hide our feelings? No! If you keep feelings of anger, sadness, and bitterness hidden away or bottled up inside, your body stays tense. Physical illness can develop, and you can feel churned up inside. It can actually be bad for your health. (It isn’t good to keep pleasant feelings inside either; all feelings need to be expressed.)

Feelings that you keep all bottled up inside don’t just go away. It’s as if you bought some bananas and stuck them in a cupboard. You might not be able to see them, but before long you’d smell them. And if you opened the cupboard, chances are you’d see little fruit flies hovering all over them. They’d be rotten.

You can try to treat emotions as if they were bananas in the cupboard. You can hide them and you can pretend they don’t exist, but they’ll still be around. And at last you’ll have to deal with them, just like those bananas.

My Hometown

My hometown lies on the Songhua river. It’s a beautiful small town built in Tang Dynasty with a history of 1,200 years old. Now it has a population of 500,000. Walking along the clean and wide streets, you can see quite a few modern buildings. Yet in the past, everything was different. Most of the people lived in low and dirty houses. It was hard for them to find jobs.

Since liberation, especially in the past few years,  GREat changes have taken place in my hometown. More and more factories, schools and shops have been built.  People began to live a happy and peaceful life.

I love my hometown and people here.

M: OK, let me check again with Jessica. I’ll call you tonight and let you know for sure. OK?

W: OK. Bye.

M: Bye.

W: Why did you sell the car?

M: It gives me too much trouble. I was spending too much money on it that I was…er…spending more money that it was worth. Unfortunately, of course, when you actually sell the car, you’ve already spent the money on it, so you lose both ways.

W: Well, what was the trouble with your old car?

M: The engine needs a lot of repairs and the wheels were giving trouble now and then. When I set off a journey, it gave me sort of feeling that I might not get to the other end, so I decided to change it.

W: Is the new car good?

M: Yes, it’s newer, more comfortable, and it hasn’t given me any trouble at all. When I set off. I’m quite sure that I’ll be able to get to the other end safely.

W: Visiting museums seems like a strange hobby. Aren’t they kind of boring?

M: Not at all. They are the most fascinating places on earth. You are always finding something interesting in a museum—if you know where to look.

W: So how many have you been to?

M: I think I’ve been to one in a week—for the past twenty—five years. So I guess that’s about 1 250.

W: What museums interest you most?

M: Well, I’ve always loved the big museums, of course, places like the Smithsonian in Washington, the Louvre in Paris, and so on. But now, it’s the smaller, more unusual museums that attract me most.

W: Tell us about some of the more unusual places you’ve visited.

M: Let me see… Well. I’ve been to a lot of unusual food museums, a noodle museum in Japan, a banana museum in the Washington state. Then there was a handbag museum in Holland.

W: That sounds really interesting.
