第三部分  阅读理解(共10小题;每小题2分,满分20分)

In recent years advances in medical technology have made it possible for people to live longer than in the past. New medicines and machines are being developed every day to extend life. However, some people, including doctors don't like the measures of making life longer, and they think that people should have the right to die when they want to. They say that the quality of life is as important as life itself and that people should not be forced to go on living when conditions of life have become unbearable. They say that people should be allowed to die with dignity and to decide when they want to die. Others think that life under any conditions is better than death and that the duty of doctors is always to extend life as long as possible. So the battle goes on and on without a certain answer.

There was one shop in the town of Mufulira which was widely known for its racial discrimination. It was a drugstore. While Europeans were served at the counter, a long line of Africans queued at the window and often not only were kept waiting but were treated rudely by the shop assistants. One day I was determined to make a public protest against this kind of thing, and many of the schoolboys in my class followed me to the store, I simply went into the shop and asked the manager politely for some medicine. As soon as he saw me standing in the place where only European customers were allowed to stand he shouted at me in a bastard (怪声怪气的) language which is only used by a boss when speaking to his servants. I stood at the counter and politely requested in proper English that I should be served. The manager became angry and said, “Even if you stand there till Christmas, I will never serve you.”

I went to the District Commissioner's office. Fortunately, he was out, for he was one of the old school; however, I saw a young District officer who was a friend of mine. He was very concerned to hear my story and told me that all I had to do was come to him personally and he wou1d buy my medicine for me. I protested that that was not good enough. I asked him to accompany me back to the store and to make a protest to the manager. This he did, and I well remember him saying to the manager,“Here is Mr. Kaunda who is a responsible member of the Urban Advisory Council, and you treat him like a common servant.” The manager of the drugstore apologized and said, “If only he had introduced himself and explained who he was, then, of course I should have given him proper service.”

I had to explain once again that he had missed my point. Why should I have to introduce myself every time I went into a store … any more than I should have to buy my medicine by going to a European friend? I want to prove that any man of any color, whatever his position, should have the right to go into any shop and buy what he wanted, After all, the money which I paid across the counter was exactly the same money as was paid by a European customer.

 C. a drugstore assistant  D. a black school teacher

61. Why didn't the writer wait at the window of the drugstore like other Africans?
 A. He believed his white friends would help him out.
 B. He wanted to fight for equal rights of all black people.

 D. He thought, being an important person, he should not be kept waiting.
(C )
It is, everyone aGREes, a huge task that the child performs when he learns to speak and the fact that he does so in such a short period of time challenges explanation.

Language learning begins with listening. Children vary GREatly in the amount of listening they do before they start speaking, and the late starters are often long listeners. Most children will “obey” spoken instructions some time before they can speak, though the world “obey” is hardly accurate (精确) as a description of the ready and eager cooperation(合作)usually shown by the child. Before they can speak, many children will also ask questions by gesture and by making questioning noises.

Any effort to trace(追踪) the development from the noises babies make to their first spoken words leads to GREat difficulties. It is agreed that they enjoy making noises, and that during the first few months one or tow noises sort themselves out as demonstrations of cheerfulness, distress(郁闷), sociability, and so on. But since these can't be said to show the baby's intention to communicate, they can hardly be considered as early forms of language. It's agreed, too, that from about three months they play with sounds for enjoyment, and that by six months they are able to add new sounds to their repertoire(能发出的全部声音). This self-imitation(模仿) leads on to intentional imitation of sounds made or words spoken to them by other people. But then the problem comes up about at which point one can say that these imitations can be considered as language.

62. By Paragraph1, the writer means that ______.
A. no explanation is necessary for such an obvious phenomenon
B. no explanation has been made up to now

D. it's just time to provide an explanation

A. that children usually obey without questioning
B. that children are passive(被动的) in the process of learning to speak
C. that children are born cooperative
D. that children start to learn to speak by listening
65. The best title for this passage would be ______.

B. Early Forms of Language
C. A Huge Task for Children
D. Noise Making and Language Learning

An American teacher's travel diary in Beijing and Xi'an
May 21, 2005 Xi'an: Terro Cotta Warriors, Huaqing Hot Spring
We woke up with train still a few hours from Xi'an and we had daylight so that we could see all the details of the loess countryside.
We arrived at our new hotel which was better than the one in Beijing, we cleaned up and had breakfast.
Then we left for our first trip to visit the famous terra cotta warriors .we were met as VIP's again and given an introduction by the director. Then we were given a complete VIP tour of all the terra cotta warriors sites. In the notes to prepare for the tour I learned that Sun Tzu's the Art of War is called Bing Fa in China. I got lot of video and pictures trying to catch all the military detail. Then we were given another state like dinner at the museum.
We boarded the bus to visit the Huaqing Hot Spring which was a major center of the Tang Dynasty and the site of romance in the emperor's home. The site is filled with more beautiful building, gardens and lots of water. I got part of the regular play that is put on to tell the romantic story of the Emperor and his wife. The costumes were very beautiful.
We arrived back at our hotel and to find another state dinner with the head of CRI and local political leaders awarding us presents. Gao Huiying and I then made an effort to catch up on recording our experiences for CRI radio.

May 20, 2005 Beijing: Forbidden City, Summer Palace

We started with the Forbidden City. It is first off Tian'an Men and I decided to use the video camera because we had little things and I wanted to be able to get through the city and catch as many views as possible. I began the video of Tian'an Men and saw the GREat Hall of the people and Chairman Mao's Mausoleum and the Monument to the People's Heroes. Then we entered the Gate of Heavenly Peace (Tian'an Men) and I knew we were going to have to move fast. Therefore we moved quickly down the middle of the city. I also noticed that there was much reconstruction, on both sides of the city, so we wouldn't be able to see those sites.
One of my favorite scenes was to video and was coming through a connecting hallway into another courtyard. The most interesting change was when we entered the imperial garden, the trees and rock construction made it look like a fairy tale.
In the afternoon, we went to the Summer Palace, we started at Dong Dong Men and went south to the arch bridge and Nanmu Dao. We took a dragon boat to the marble boat. From there we went back to the boathouse and then up Longevity Hill (Wanshou Shan) from which we could view everything around Kunming Lake. Gao Huiying was very tired with the pace up the hill and said that she was still hurting from our run yesterday up the GREat wall. We came down the hill beside Leshou Tang and rejoined our group at Dong Dong Men.
We went back to CRI when I spent an hour recharging the video camera and talking with Li Peichun about how well his team was taking care of us. Then we found out we were late for dinner. we had dinner and hurried to the Beijing railway station. Gao Huiying told me, as we waited in the crowded station, that she had never been in an airplane. This was in response to my comment that it had been many years since I had been on a train.
