Clearhead的这些做法,对Muddlehead都起到了哪些作用呢?Muddlehead今后变成了什么样了呢?
The next morning, Muddlehead took the dog rabbit hunting. As soon as Muddlehead saw a rabbit, he let the dog go, shouting, “Chase the rabbit straight to the house!”
The dog ran right back to Clearhead’s house and went to sleep. Muddlehead followed as fast as he could. When he reached Clearhead’s house, he said,“The rabbit is mine! The rabbit is mine!”
Clearhead said, “I have seen no rabbit this day.” But Muddlehead did not believe him. He felt sure that Clearhead and his wife had had the rabbit for lunch.
“Never mind,” Clearhead said.“Let us go fishing. The river is just jumping with fish today.”
Before the two men left for the river, Clearhead called his wife aside.“Go to the market and buy a basket of fish,”he whispered.
At the river, Clearhead caught a fish almost at once. The minute the fish was on his line, Clearhead did a strange thing. He hurled the fish and the fishing pole over his shoulder in the direction of his house. Then he said,“That fish will bring his friends home in a basket for me, thanks to my fishing pole.”
“A most remarkable thing,” Muddlehead said, astounded.
The two men hurried back to Clearhead’s house. Sure enough, there was Clearhead’s wife at the door, a basket of fish in her hands.
Naturally Muddlehead stole the magic fishing rod that very night. The next morning, he went fishing and caught a fish at once. He promptly threw the fish and the fishing rod in the direction of his house. Then he ran home. As he came close to his house, he shouted, “Wife, wife!Bring out the basket of fish.”
The poor woman came to the door and stared at him. Then she cried, “You are a fool!”And she would not speak to him the rest of the day.
The next day, Muddlehead went to visit his friend.“Strange things have been happening,”Muddlehead said accusingly.
“If you stop stealing, I am sure these strange things will not happen any more,”Clearhead said.
“I will never steal again,” Muddlehead promised. He remained stupid, but he was never lazy again. And Clearhead never play-ed another trick on his friend for the rest of his days.
