College students in North America usually have a three month summer break. In recent years more and more students have been traveling, studying, or working abroad during this time. It helps to enhance1 their university experience as well as broaden2 their thinking. An overseas experience looks GREat on a resume3, and is almost always considered a plus by employers who wish to have a well-rounded employee.
Many students will normally travel with all of their items in a backpack, so they are called backpackers. Backpackers are known for their sense of adventure and ability to travel on a low budget. Most backpackers will camp or sleep in youth hostels to avoid spending their money on expensive hotels. If someone says they are going to backpack through Europe for the summer, it means they will travel or hike throughout Europe.
More and more universities seem to be encouraging their students to study or work abroad. A semester4 or year abroad at a foreign university can be quite expensive but very rewarding for the student. Many programs are available in all corners of the globe. Students can plant trees in the rain forest of Costa Rica or help with urban5 planning in South Africa. Opportunities seem endless as more people focus on getting a global education. Other programs include a semester at sea, where students board a ship and travel around the world stopping at different ports to learn about a specific subject in one region of the world. Of course, the Internet has made it possible to have a global classroom online for students, but others prefer experience over textbooks and computers.
