Part IV Comprehensive Exercises

A.Reading Comprehension

Glass is a remarkable substance made from the simplest raw materials. It can be colored or colorless, monochrome or polychrome, transparent, translucent,or opaque. It is lightweight, impermeable to liquids, readily cleaned and reused, durable yet fragile, and often very beautiful.Glass can be decorated in multiple ways and its optical properties are exceptional. In all its myriad forms—as tableware, containers,in architecture and design-glass represents a major achievement in the history of technological developments.

Since the Bronze Age,about 3000B.C., glass has been used for making various kinds of objects. It was first made from a mixture of silica, lime and an alkali such as soda or potash, and these remained the basic inGREdients of glass until the development of lead glass in the seventeenth century. When heated, the mixture becomes soft and malleable and can be formed by various techniques into a vast array of shapes and sizes. The homogeneous mass thus formed by melting then cools to create glass, but in contrast to most materials formed in this way(metals, for instance),glass lacks the crystalline structure normally associated with solids, and instead retains the random molecular structure of a liquid. In effect,as molten glass cools,it progressively stiffens until rigid, but does so without setting up a network of interlocking crystals customarily associated with that process. This is why glass shatters so easily when dealt a blow, why glass deteriorates over time, espcially when exposed to moisture, and why glassware must be slowly reheated and uniformly cooled after manufacture to release internal stresses induced by uneven cooling.

Another unusual feature of glass is the manner in which its viscosity changes as it turns from a cold substance into a hot, ductile liquid. Unlike metals that flow or“freeze”at specific temperatures, glass proGREssively softens as the temperature rises, going through varying stages of malleability until it flows like a thick syrup. Each stage of malleability allows the glass to be manipulated into various forms,by different techniques, and if suddenly cooled the object retains the shape achieved at that point.Glass is thus am enable to a greater number of heat-forming techniques than most other materials.

1.A suitable title for the passage would be

A)The physical character of glass

B)The process of creating glass

C)The remarkable substance—glass

C)The glass shatters easily.

D)The lead glass is different from the other glass forming by the traditional process.

There is nothing illogical or synthetic about the humility of GREat bookmen in calling attention to the limitations of the book.No book can  1  us to know everything that is to be known,or feel everything that is to be felt.A book is part of life, not a substitute   2  it.It is not a fit   3  for worship or enshrinement. Stress is an unavoidable, necessary, and potentially healthful reality of our society.People of all ages encounter stress.Children begin to experience stress during prenatal development and during childbirth.

Researchers have been able to identify two types of emotional stress.Stress that originates in childhood can remain as an unconscious, unresolved conflict that adversely affects the body. For example, children whose parents punish them whenever they show anger may grow up learning to repress their angry feelings. As a result, they may develop chronic stomach pain, back pain,or headaches. The second type of emotional stress arises from such life situations as the death of a loved one, divorce, job loss,or illness.Although this type of stress may be of short duration,it can be more severe and cause GREater physical damage.

The different ways in which individuals respond to stress may bring healthful or unhealthy results. One person experiencing a GREat deal of stress may function exceptionally well while another may be unable to function at all.If stressful situations are continually encountered, the individual's physical, social, and mental health are eventually affected.

Questions:

1.According researchers, what is the first type of stress?

2.What adverse effects may be caused to the body of a child by parents who punish him whenever he shows anger?

3.What is the other type of stress researchers have identified?

4.According to the passage, how do individuals respond to stress?

Adding to societal changes today is an enormous stockpile of information.(1)The individual now has more information available than in any past generation, and the task of finding that one piece of information relevant to his or her specific problem is complicated ,time-consuming and sometimes even overwhelming

(2)Coupled with the growing quantity of information is the development of technologies which enable the storage and delivery of more information with GREater speed to more locations than has ever been possible before.Computer technology makes it possible to store vast amounts of data in machine-readable files, and to program computers to locate specific information.Telecommunications developments enable the sending of messages via television, radio, and very shortly, electronic mail to bombard people with multitudes of messages.Satellites have extended the power of communications to report events at the instant of occurrence.Expertise can be shared worldwide through teleconferencing, and problems in dispute can be settled without the participants leaving their homes and /or jobs to travel to a distant conference site.Technology has facilitated the sharing of information and the storage and delivery of information, thus making more information available to more people.
