E. The Reading Preference of the USA College Students in 2002

It can be easily perceived from the above table that the American university students treat book differently for some are borrowed and read more frequently than some others.

Of the four classifications the one most welcomed is the popular fiction, being 65.9 percent of the total, while the second one is the general nonfiction, about 18.2 percent, the third the science/technology/education which is 10.8 percent, and the fourth or the least borrowed is the group of art/literature/poetry, 5.1 percent only.

It is hard to determine whether this is good or bad. But as far as I am concerned, the preferences of the USA college students are somewhat unreasonable since they favor merely popular fiction, but neglect too much science, technology and art, etc. Fiction-reading in a large sense is employed mainly for amusement and relaxation, having almost nothing to do with applied science, and above all, prosperity and strengthening of any nation.

Unlike the Americans I prefer books of science/technology/education as only by means of advanced science and technology can our citizens become as intelligent and competent as other citizens and our country be as prosperous and powerful as other nations.
