A new English telephone service thatallows listeners to learn English throughrecorded conversations between native English-speakers and a Chinese translator opened recently in Beijing.
2857Oriental English Telephone Service consists of 10recorded programmes, three of which are in cooperation with the Patrick English Network, the New OrientalSchool, and Crazy English.
“Why are so many Chinese unable to express themselves in English fluently, evenafter years of English education ?”said Dr Wang Qiang with the New Oriental School.“It is because, for so long,we have been learning English as a branch of knowledge, instead of as a skill,a tool.”
2857's recorded programmes includelight news, jokes and everyday conversations.Learners just use an ordinaryphone and dial 2-8-5-7.An automaticoperator willthen direct themto the programme they want. The service costs oneyuanper minute.About a half of the available programmes are renewed daily.
“Most programmes are accompanied by Chinese explanations of the difficultpoints,”said an editor of 2857.“We aimat satisfying the different needs of the audience, frombeginners to advanced learners,”she said.
