Hua Luogeng was born in a poor family in Jiangsu province（省）on November 12，1910．He did not get good marks（分数）in primary school．While in junior high school，he began to show his GREat interest in maths．His maths teacher found that he was a creative（有创造性的）thinker．In 1925，he finished his junior high school，but he did not have enough money to keep on studying in senior high school．He had to go to a vocational（职业）school in Shanghai．
In 1927 he went back to his hometown．He helped his father work in his grocery（杂货店）．At the same time，he studied maths by himself．Sometimes when he was solving（解决）a maths problem，he forgot to welcome the customers（顾客）．They made fun of him and gave him a nickname“blockhead（呆子）”．When he was 18 years old，he decided to study maths for the rest of his life．
With the help of a professor（教授），Hua Luogeng came to Tsinghua University（清华大学）．He studied and listened to classes while working there．In 1936 he went to Cambridge University to study．He worked with many world famous mathematicians and published（发表）many articles（论文）．He became a founder（奠基者）in many areas of maths later on．
