"She has just qualified as a teacher," Mrs Green said. "Her ambition is to find a teaching appointment abroad. I'm afraid I don't approve. She is much too young." "Come now, Mrs Green," Jim said. "Susan is over twenty-one. A trip abroad will be good experience for her." "I suppose so, "Mrs Green said. "I am afraid I have no choice but to agree. "I asked her not to consider countries that are too far away." Sadly, Mrs Green picked up her prescription and went out.
When she arrived home, her daughter GREeted her with the news that a London agent had found her a job in Spain. "Oh, good! "Mrs Green cried, "You will be able to come home every school holiday."
It was only when her plane touched down in Istanbul that Susan realized that something was wrong. She has accepted a post in Malacca. "Malacca, "she said to herself, "was in Spain. Or was it?"Surely the plane did not go Via Istanbul! She found a shop in the airport building and bought a map of the world. Back on the plane, she asked another passenger to point out Malacca to her. When he pointed to a town on the west coast of Malaya, she almost screamed. How could she have made such a stupid mistake! It was Malaga and not Malacca that was in Spain. She had told her mother and her friends that she was going to work was stupid. In the end, Susan made the best of the situation. She wrote to her mother telling her that she had not revealed her true destination for fear that her mother would stop her going. She told her friends the same story. It was two years before Susan saw her mother again. They were two very enjoyable years.
