B.In this section, you will hear two short passages. At the end of each passage, you will hear some questions. After you hear a question, you must choose the bestanswer from the four choices marked A),B),C)and D).
Passage One
Niagara Falls, located on the Canadian-American border,is a popular tourist destination. It is often visited by honeymooners.
Niagara Falls actually consists of two waterfalls. The Horseshoe Falls, which is on the Canadian side of the border,is the larger. As its name implies,it is a large semicircle. The American Falls, which is slightly higher than the Horseshoe Falls,is almostastraightline.Perhaps one of the most significant differences between the two falls is the flow of water. The flow of water over the American Falls is 6,000,000 gallons per minute while the flow over the Canadian Falls is nineteen times GREater.
The shape of the Canadian falls is changing due to the rapid flow of water over the edge. This erosion of the edge is GREater in the middle where the water flows faster and is causing the semicircle shape of the falls to increase. Some scientists are worried about this effect.
Both falls are part of the Niagara River.Only thirty-six miles in length, the Niagara River is a relatively short river. It connects Lake Erie and Lake Ontario. In fact, since it connects two larger bodies of water,it is not really a river but rather a strait.
Questions 1 to 3 are based on the passage you have just heard.
1.What may we conclude about rivers?
2.How many gallons per minute of water flow over the Horseshoe Falls?
3.Which of these statements is true?
Passage Two
Today we use pens all the time without thinking too much aboutthem. However, there was a time when writing was quite difficult because such instruments did not exist.
From the eighth to eighteenth century, people wrote with quills.A quill is a bird feather. Most quills were strong goose or swan feathers.
In the 1700s,metal pens were invented. These pens had a metal point, called a nib, which was connected to a wooden holder.Like quills, metal pens had to be dipped in ink quite often in order to write.
The fountain pen, which can be refilled, was invented in 1884 by I.E.Waterman.A fountain pen has a supply of ink in it and a permanent steel point.Ink constantly flows to the pointso itis unnecessary for the writer to stop writing every few words to dip the pen. This made writing more enjoyable. The ballpoint pens used today were firstsold in 1946.They also have their own supply of ink inside. However, the ink is somewhat thicker and oilier than regular ink. This pen has a small metal ball thatturns when the pen is moved across a sheet of paper.
Questions 4 to 5 are based on the passage you have just heard.
4.What does the author suggest that the metal pens were more similar to?
5.When was the first ballpoint pen sold?
C.Listen to the passage and complete the following chart with the information you get from the tape.
An invention is the result of a new idea that someone had and was able to develop into a new useful thing.Sometimes a new invention is the result of a tremendous amount of hard work, and sometimes an invention is the result of luck. Some important inventions include the thermometer by Galileo Galilei of Italy in 1593,the adding machine by Blaise Pascal of France in 1642,the elevator by Elisha Otis of the United States in 1852,the telephone by Alexander Graham Bell of the United States in 1876,and the airplane by Orville and Wilbur Wright also of the United States in 1903.
